The House Oversight Committee, led by Republicans, plans to hold a hearing on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), commonly known as UFOs, next week on July 26.
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) announced the hearing on Twitter, saying it comes after GOP lawmakers promised to further investigate UAPs following unconfirmed claims that the U.S. military had found crashed alien spacecraft. The Pentagon says it has not found evidence to support this claim.
When asked if he believes in extraterrestrial life given the upcoming hearing, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said he is open to seeing any facts and information on UAPs that the Department of Defense may have, as they may want more funding. McCarthy said he supports being transparent with the American people about what information the government has regarding UAPs.
Reps. Burchett and Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), who are leading the hearing, have suggested pushback from government agencies but did not provide specifics. Burchett said he is “sick of government” not trusting the people and wants professionals to testify at the hearing.
Earlier this year, the Pentagon office reviewing UAPs said out of over 800 cases, most could be explained by balloons, drones, natural phenomena or other ordinary sources. Only a small percentage were deemed “anomalous.” The office found no evidence that UAPs originated from aliens.
