The House Oversight Committee has tentatively scheduled a hearing on UFOs for late July, according to Republican lawmakers privy to the plans. However, some committee members and Defense Department officials are reportedly pushing back against holding such a hearing at this time.
The hearing was requested by Reps. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) and Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), who argue that the public deserves answers on UFO sightings given recent acknowledgements by the Pentagon and intelligence community. Over 500 instances of unidentified aerial phenomena have been officially documented in the past year alone.
Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) and Speaker Kevin McCarthy have approved the hearing request. But an anonymous Republican committee member told reporters there are “internal machinations” to stop the hearing, with concerns it could spiral out of control.
A committee spokesperson confirmed plans are in the works but said the hearing is still in early planning stages. They did not directly address whether there is internal resistance.
The Defense Department is also said to be pushing back against testifying at the hearing, according to Rep. Burchett. The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
If held as planned, the hearing would follow growing interest in Congress around UFOs and unexplained sightings. Earlier this year, a Senate hearing saw testimony from a Pentagon official who leads investigations into such incidents. He reported over 650 open cases but said there is no evidence yet of alien spacecraft.
But some lawmakers remain undeterred in their curiosity, even as the hearing faces organizational hurdles. “It’s about aliens,” said Rep. Burchett frankly. “I think people deserve to know.”
